27 August 2002 - Skopje

After a long night on an overnight bus back from Istanbul, I arrived in Skopje at 8.30 in the morning, determined to enjoy a nice morning before flying back to London.

Although it was a Tuesday morning, Macedonia's main square was empty.

The city was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1963, and this Turkish stone bridge was one of the few structures to survive.

Sadly, the reconstruction aid was not always spent building the most beautiful replacements.

Skopje has the largest Turkish baths in the Balkans.

It also has a very large old fort, though I do not know precisely how old it is.

However, apart from a few mosques, Skopje was remarkably disappointing, and after three hours, I felt I had seen everything.
