25 August 2002 - Bursa

Bursa, the first capital of what became the Ottoman Empire, always held a respected place in the Imperial favour, and was well-endowed with impressive buildings.

Bursa's big mosque is the only one I have ever seen which has its fountain on the inside.

It is a very busy building, with all sorts of people all doing prayer/business/chat.

The architecture is not subtle, but not ugly either.

Bursa, like much of Anatolia, is hilly.

We took the opportunity to go for a Turkish bath in a five-hundred year old building as well.

An hour later, and we were so relaxed and happy, it was hard to believe.
